In 1959, the population of Kloof was about 1500, and the M13 built in the 1940s, was the National Road, Mr. Gerard Viger opened National Road Pharmacy in the existing Maytime Centre as one of only 3 shops there. He started with 2 full time and 1 part-time staff members.
Fast forward, 60 years on, to 2019, the National Road is now the ‘back’ road, and is called the M13, the population of Kloof is now over 30000 and the pharmacy has changed, renovated and evolved many times over the years, to become a pioneer in the health and wellness space by becoming an integrated health care provider, Thrive – better than well.
Thrive, previously known as National Road Pharmacy has had 3 owners over the years. Mr. Gerard Viger handed over the reins to Jane Zietsman (then Swemmer) in 1996, and Lynda Bryant-Mutsaerts bought the pharmacy in 2005. Over the last 14 years, there have been a number of renovations and updating of the store culminating in a major renovation and rebrand in October 2016, when Thrive was born.
Thrive was a long-term vision of Lynda’s as she was looking to create a space that could meet all the healthcare needs of her community, both from treatments for ailments and preventative approaches. A space that combined a more holistic approach to health and wellness and provided a professional approach to a more integrated healthcare of the individual. Thrive met these needs by keeping the community better than well with a beautiful space to meet wellness needs through the combination of a pharmacy, health shop, juice bar and clinic. Thrive has aimed to support local, natural and organic produce as much as possible and therefore has created a niche and trusted space in which to meet the healthcare needs of the Upper Highway community.
The staff at Thrive have been key to ensuring the success of Thrive and the position that is held in the community as a much-loved destination for healthcare needs. Our Thrive team really excels at what they do. Their kindness, friendliness, and professionalism, attributes to the love they have of our customers and community. Our driver, Sipho Eric Mlaba has been part of the pharmacy for over 45 years this year. He has witnessed many changes in the area over the years. When he started working with “Mr. V”, he rode a bicycle and delivered to the big plots around Maytime. As the area grew and developed, he practiced and learned to drive a motorbike. Under Jane’s ownership, he got his drivers license and drove a yellow Citigolf around Kloof. He still proudly drives our Thrive Tazz around the Upper Highway and often takes extra long to do delivery as he is having a cup of tea with the patients who are now long standing friends. Our staff have been well trained and have grown up within the pharmacy. Blessing, Monde, TK, and Noo have all been trained up from basic assistants to qualified post basic pharmacist assistants. Irma is another well-loved long-standing asset in our pharmacy as she has been part of the Thrive family for over 15 years this year. Our clinic, which was started in 1986 by Sr Jenny McInnes and Mr. Viger has grown now to a fulltime primary health care provider offering basic primary healthcare services to the community. Sr Jenny also still works part-time as a locum nurse for Thrive and offers flu vaccines and wellness tests for corporate days at local businesses.
We would never be able to be celebrating this wonderful milestone of 60 years serving the community, without our key ingredient… our fabulous customers. The community and people of the Upper Highway have been so incredibly supportive of each and every new introduction and change that we have made over the years. We are incredibly grateful and humbled by the support we have enjoyed. The community that we serve are not only a business bit are part of our family and we feel very privileged to play a small part in keeping them better than well.
Please join us as we celebrate this milestone. There will be amazing specials throughout the month of July. MR V, Jane, and Lynda are looking forward to seeing our community at our Thrive cocktail party on the 26th of July from 5-7pm.
